Our team STRIVES to create innovative solutions and provide high-quality education based on Science and Technology for Resilient Infrastructure and a Vibrant, Equitable Society. The primary focus of our research is on smart and resilient civil infrastructure and urban systems. Our research provides a better understanding of infrastructure evolution at the interface of environmental, social, and technical developments to identify economically efficient, environmentally friendly, and socially equitable pathways toward smart, sustainable and resilient infrastructure systems. Our research focuses on addressing contemporary and forthcoming challenges related to infrastructure systems, such as the growing disparity between the required investment and the available funding, the exacerbation of environmental stressors due to climate change, and the need for efficient use of limited natural, human, and financial resources.
As educators, we aim to inspire our students to think intensively and critically and to live ethically and morally. We develop and deliver educational and training content in diverse areas of civil engineering, construction engineering and management, and project management in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online formats. We see teaching as a source of aesthetic experience that is more art than science. Therefore, we believe no preset pedagogical approach is appropriate for all teaching conditions. Hence, our teaching strategy is tailored for the specific subject, audience, and purpose of the course. We believe that our student-centered instruction is imperative to address the diversity that populates today’s classrooms. Approaching instruction in this manner, also allows us to situate concepts within the grasp of our students, making learning accessible but not uniformed and predictable. We believe educators should never stop learning. Therefore, to support our educational programs, we continuously conduct engineering education research, attend teaching and professional development workshops, and work with our industry collaborators to refine our course material and teaching methods.
